ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash at approximately 10:35 a.m. Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the intersection of Spotswood Trail and New Hope Road in Rockingham County.

According to Sergeant Jessica Shehan, the preliminary investigation indicates a 2018 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling east on Spotswood Trail at a high rate of speed when a 2026 Toyota pickup truck attempted to cross Spotswood Trail from New Hope Road. The motorcycle struck the side of the pickup, and the rider was ejected into the median.

The motorcycle rider, 22-year-old Xavier Smith of New Market, Virginia, was transported to Sentara RMH Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver and passenger of the pickup, both of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, were not injured.

This crash remains under investigation.
