HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — United Way of Central Shenandoah Valley volunteers are sorting supplies and stuffing backpacks at Eastern Mennonite University for their third annual “Tools for Schools” event.
The goal for this event is to provide backpacks full of school supplies for the upcoming school year for Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County students.

Executive Director Amanda Leech said an event allows families to save money when it comes to back-to-school shopping.
“So, allowing families to save that little bit of money gives them a little bit more freedom in their weekly, monthly budgets,” said Leech. “And doing things like free haircuts and vaccines. It saves time, it saves energy, it just gives working families a little bit of a step up when they’re headed back to school.”

Leech said that they will be at the University Commons on EMU campus until 4 PM today, August 7, 2025, to accept donations of school supplies.
“We still need supplies. We’ve got about 800 backpacks that we are still working to stuff, and we urgently need things like loose-leaf paper, some colored pencils, markers, Crayons, highlighters are big items, scissors. Those are all things that we need,” said Leech.

The group will continue their work tomorrow, August 8, 2025, from 9 AM to 4 PM for families to pick up supplies on Saturday, August 9, 2025, for their back-to-school resource fair.
