AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Virginia State Police (VSP) Bureau of Criminal Investigation Appomattox Field Office has concluded its investigation into the officer-involved shooting that took place December 17, 2025, on Parkersburg Turnpike in Augusta County. 

According to VSP Public Relations Coordinator Matthew Demlein, the findings were turned over to the Augusta County Commonwealth’s Attorney, who determined that the actions of the deputies involved were reportedly justified.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. on December 17, 2025, three deputies assigned to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit were attempting to take a subject, 42-year-old Dustin Griffin of Staunton, VA, into custody on six felony warrants when shots were fired. One deputy was struck in the arm and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The two remaining deputies returned fire, killing Griffin. 

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office then reached out to Virginia State Police to conduct the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
