HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Students, families and community members across Harrisonburg are invited to take part in Bike, Walk & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Elementary schools across the city will offer designated walking and biking routes led by Harrisonburg City Public Schools (HCPS) parents and City staff. Participating families will receive route details and gathering locations directly from their schools ahead of the event. Middle and high school students are encouraged to participate. Any activities related to the event will be communicated by schools.
“We’re excited to see students and families come together to enjoy a fun, active start to their day,” Harrisonburg Safe Routes to School Coordinator Andrea Troyer said. “Bike, Walk & Roll to School Day is a great opportunity to build healthy habits, strengthen community connections, and promote safer routes for everyone.”
Parents and guardians are encouraged to join their children along the route whenever possible and ensure that proper safety gear, including helmets, is worn. Students participating without a guardian will be required to sign in with a Safe Routes to School leader at the start of the route. Event leaders will be identifiable by reflective vests.
School-specific activities, safety tips and additional details will be shared directly by each school before May 6. General information about recommended walking and biking routes is available online.
