BRIDGESWATER, Va – The man accused of shooting two Bridgewater College safety officers has decided to forego a trial next year and plead guilty instead.

According to online records, Alexander Wyatt Campbell pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder as well as two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony during a hearing Monday afternoon in Rockingham County Circuit Court.

A judge then sentenced the 28-year-old Campbell to two life terms plus six years.

The charges stemmed from the shooting on February 1st of 2022 that claimed the lives of Police Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer J-J Jefferson.

He was scheduled to go to trial in April of next year.
