ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Virginia State Police (VSP) is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred this morning, August 28, 2026, at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Coopers Mountain Road in Rockingham County.

According to VSP Public Relations Coordinator Matthew Demlein, the preliminary investigation indicates a 2006 Jeep Liberty was travelling northbound on Coopers Mountain Road when it crossed the middle of the road and struck a southbound 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 

The driver of the Jeep Liberty, 28-year-old Danielle Smith of Dayton, VA, suffered serious injuries and succumbed to those injuries at the hospital.

An infant passenger did not appear to have any injuries but was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
