ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — UPDATE:  The pedestrian has been identified as Jerry E. Shifflett, 58, of Rockingham, Va.

Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred yesterday, July 21, 2026, at approximately 11:05 p.m. on North Valley Pike in Rockingham County.

According to Virginia State Police Spokesman Matt Demlein, the preliminary investigation indicates that a tractor trailer travelling northbound in the 3600 block of North Valley Pike entered the right turn lane to turn into a business. 

The tractor trailer then struck a pedestrian who was walking in the right turn lane.

The male pedestrian died at the scene. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation.
