WAYNESBORO, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Waynesboro Police Department is investigating an overnight shooting incident on Monday, May 18, 2026, at approximately 8:52 p.m. at the 1500 Block of North Delphine Avenue.
The initial investigation indicates that this was an isolated incident involving a confrontation between two individuals who know each other.
During the altercation, one individual reportedly produced a handgun and fired in the direction of the other, striking the 25-year-old male victim from Waynesboro once. The victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being released.
The shooting suspect is identified as 23-year-old Joseph William Kestner, Jr. of Waynesboro. He is currently wanted on the following alleged charges:
· Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
· Felony Maliciously Shoot with Intent
· Misdemeanor Reckless Handling of a Firearm
· Misdemeanor Discharging a firearm in the city limits
Waynesboro Police, assisted by the Virginia State Police, Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, and Staunton Police Department, searched the area where Kestner was last seen fleeing on foot, but were unable to locate him or the firearm. His whereabouts are currently unknown, but investigative efforts continue to find and arrest him.
