Work will begin at 7 am on Tuesday, February 24, and continue until 3 pm on Wednesday, February 25. The stretch of University Boulevard depicted in red on the map (see image) will not be accessible to through traffic during this time. Both Carrier Drive and Modular Hill Lane will remain open. Only service vehicles will be permitted to access the areas depicted in yellow. Residents and students are encouraged to follow posted detours to travel around the work area. Roadwork on University Boulevard will continue in the coming months. Motorists should expect single-lane closures and possible delays as crews complete roadway improvements in the project area. Any updates or additional closures will be communicated through the Harrisonburg Public Works social media channels in coordination with James Madison University.

Improvements include construction of a new two-lane roadway with a shared-use path and sidewalk, transitioning the corridor into a safer and more efficient multi-modal connection for those traveling to and from JMU and destinations in southeast Harrisonburg. The realignment will also establish University Boulevard as the primary through movement at Oak Hill Drive, improving traffic operations and safety for University Boulevard and Port Republic Road. The project is funded through the Virginia Department of Transportation Revenue Sharing Program.
