Friday will be a day of mourning in the City of Staunton, in honor of legendary high school basketball coach Paul Hatcher who passed away last week.

In a release, city officials said that flags will be flown at half-staff on September 1st.

Hatcher was a four-time state champion at the helm of the boys’ basketball program at then-Robert E. Lee High School. He is also a member of five separate halls of fame, and an 11-time Virginia High School League Coach of the Year.

Staunton mayor Stephen Claffey said the city’s kids were “blessed” to learn from and be mentored by Hatcher.

He was 80 years old.
