How It Happened
• Asia Williams knocked down a jumper to get the scoring started, but four-straight by the Royals gave them a small 4-2 edge. Right on cue, Jay Garcia drained a three-pointer on a dish from Riley Corcoran to give BC the lead back, and Autumn Gentry finished at the rim to make it a 7-4 edge. EMU responded with a score, but the Eagles pulled away over the final 3:19 of the opening period. Garcia started the separation with an old-school three-point playand Jaiden Polston followed with a bucket in the paint. Trinity Hedrick checked in and drilled a three-pointer for her first collegiate points to make it 15-8. EMU scored, but did not affect BC’s momentum as a pair of makes by Corcoran at the charity stripe and a layup by Angelina Yann capped off a 12-2 BC run and made it 19-8 after 10 minutes of play.
• Yann got the scoring started in the second quarter for BC, and EMU replied on its next trip. That was EMU’s last bucket for the next 4:19 as BC blew the game wide open thanks to a 12-0 scoring run. Gentry started the run with a three-pointer and tossed in another during the scoring spree. Contributions from Corcoran, Polston and Savannah Wilson helped swell the advantage to 33-10 with 4:12 to go in the half. EMU ended the scoring run with a pair of makes at the free throw line, but still had a drought from the field. Corcoran knocked down a three-pointer in response, and Polston made a pair of free throws before the Royals ended a six-minute dry spell from the field. BC responded with an 8-2 run following the Royals’ bucket as a pair of Corcoran free throws made it 46-16 at the half.
• EMU drained a three-pointer to open the third quarter, but a 7-2 BC run followed, led by another three-pointer from Gentry to make it 53-21. The Royals stopped the run with another score, but Gentry caught nylon from deep again with another three-pointer for the Eagles in response. EMU connected from deep in response, but Corcoran has the Eagles’ reply as the teams traded punches from behind the arc. Garcia knocked down the first two-point shot in nearly three minutes to push the lead north of 30 points. EMU knocked down a pair of free throws inside the final minute, but a buzzer-beater by Abbie Baker in the paint made it 63-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
• The two sides traded buckets over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter before a 6-0 EMU run sliced the lead to 67-39 with under five minutes to play. Five-straight points by BC, led by four from Garcia, swelled the lead again to north of 30 points, but a 7-0 EMU run cut the gap to 72-46 with over a minute on the clock. Anna-Faith Brunk put the final touches on the victory as she knocked down a pair of free throws with 28 seconds to play to seal the deal.
