HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Harrisonburg Police Department is mourning the passing of a retired K9.

HPD made the announcement this morning that K9 Tyr has passed away.

Officials say Tyr served the City of Harrisonburg from 2017-2022 and was then retired to his handler. He received several awards from the Virginia Police Canine Association including 2018 Narcotics case of the year and 2021 Apprehension case of the year. These awards are in addition to his numerous deployments and arrests. He was a dual-purpose canine from Czech Republic trained in patrol utilities and narcotics detection.

At the time of his passing, Tyr was 10 years old.
