STAUNTON, VA (Virginia Department of Transportation) — Virginia Department of Transportation crews and contractors have made significant progress in plowing and treating the interstates and primary roads throughout the 11-county Staunton District.

Bitterly cold temperatures have turned snow- and sleet covered streets into solid ice, and motorists venturing out should continue to exercise extreme caution. Roads that look clear or simply wet can still have icy patches.

Crews continue to work their way through secondary roads and subdivisions. To reach as many roads as soon as possible, VDOT cannot avoid plows pushing snow against the end of driveways. To make snow shoveling easier, clear a 10-foot area to the right of your driveway (as you face the road) so plows won’t push snow back across your driveway apron.

Here are the conditions as of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the VDOT Staunton District:

Interstate 81 – Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Warren and Frederick counties.

Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.

Primary Roads – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Clarke, Frederick, Rockingham, Page, Rockbridge, Shenandoah and Warren counties. Minor conditions in Highland County.

Secondary Roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Highland, Page, Rockbridge and Rockingham. Minor conditions in Clarke, Frederick, Shenandoah and Warren.
