BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) — The Bridgewater College football team knocked off Washington and Lee 22-21 on Saturday, scoring a touchdown and converting a two-point try as time expired to secure the walk-off victory.

The Generals received the opening kickoff and put together a drive built around their trademark rushing attack. As the BC defense began to slow the run, Washington and Lee used a play-action fake to find Sparrow wide open in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good, giving the Generals a 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the game.

Bridgewater’s opening offensive series did not go as planned, as a sack put the Eagles behind the chains and forced a punt. The defense responded by forcing a three-and-out to get the ball back. Bridgewater’s next possession began inside its own 10-yard line, but a 26-yard rush by Chris Crossland moved BC near midfield. A roughing-the-passer penalty pushed the Eagles into Generals territory, but a screen pass lost yardage and forced another punt.

A punt by Aiden Grefe pinned Washington and Lee inside its own 20-yard line. The Generals responded with an 11-play, 85-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good, extending the lead to 14-0.

The BC offense responded on its next possession. Facing fourth down, the Eagles rolled the dice with a fake punt. Grefe delayed his attempt before taking off up the middle for a 34-yard gain to the Washington and Lee 32-yard line. Bridgewater continued to move the ball, and a 15-yard pass from Parker Burke to Wyatt Jervis converted a third down and moved the Eagles inside the 20. Two plays later, Jervis ran a counter to the left side and punched the ball into the end zone. Ben Bermudez converted the extra point to cut the deficit to 14-7.

Washington and Lee took possession late in the first half and began another drive down the field. The Eagles’ defense forced the Generals into fourth down twice during the series. After Washington and Lee converted the first attempt, the defense came up with a game-changing play on the next one. The Generals’ quarterback scrambled before throwing a pass that landed in the arms of Baylor Jones. Jones intercepted the pass and returned it to the BC 1-yard line before being tripped up.

A delay-of-game penalty following the change of possession pushed the Eagles back, but Burke found Brandon Anderson in the corner of the end zone for a toe-tapping touchdown catch. Bermudez added the extra point to tie the game at 14-14 just before halftime. Washington and Lee attempted to put together a drive before the break, but Brayden Billings broke up a deep pass as time expired, sending the teams into the locker room tied.

Both teams traded punts to open the second half before Bridgewater moved the ball on its second possession. Facing fourth down late in the drive, Burke found Nick Barahona, who broke free for a 30-yard gain into the Generals’ red zone. The Eagles were stopped short of the line to gain on the ensuing plays and attempted a field goal, but the 26-yard try sailed wide left in the wind.

Washington and Lee took possession late in the third quarter and quickly moved inside the Bridgewater red zone with a big play. On the next rush, Kyle Galloway punched the ball loose, and Pierre Harris Jr. recovered it at the Bridgewater 6-yard line. The Eagles moved out from their own goal line, but a sack forced another punt. Grefe delivered a 57-yard punt that flipped the field as the game moved into the fourth quarter.

The Generals responded with a clock-consuming drive, converting four third downs while using nearly nine minutes. Washington and Lee capped the possession with a 4-yard touchdown run just over the goal line. The extra point was good, giving the Generals a 21-14 lead with 2:28 remaining.

Bridgewater got the ball back, and Jamari Lewis provided a spark with a 39-yard kickoff return before being brought down by the last defender. Starting at its own 45-yard line, the Eagles went to work. Facing third down early in the drive, Burke found Caeden Walters for a 4-yard gain and a first down.

Burke was sacked on the next play, forcing Bridgewater to use a timeout. The Eagles regained the lost yardage but faced fourth-and-10. Burke dropped back before scrambling for a 12-yard gain, diving past the line to gain to keep the drive alive.

Bridgewater faced another fourth down, and Burke found Jervis on an angle route over the middle for a 12-yard gain and another first down. An intentional grounding penalty on the next play pushed the Eagles back. Bridgewater regained 10 yards but faced fourth-and-14 with just two seconds remaining.

From the Washington and Lee 21-yard line, Burke took the snap from the shotgun and fired a pass over the middle. Barahona leaped to make the catch in the end zone for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to one point. With no time remaining, Bridgewater elected to go for the win with a two-point conversion.

Burke took the snap from the shotgun and found Walters at the pylon. Walters tapped his toes in bounds to complete the catch and secure the successful conversion, giving the Eagles a dramatic 22-21 walk-off victory and their first ODAC win of the season.

Burke finished 25-of-33 passing for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Grefe led the Eagles in rushing following his clutch fake punt, while four Bridgewater players recorded double-digit net rushing yards. Barahona led the receiving corps with 82 total yards, highlighted by his game-tying touchdown catch as time expired.

Linebackers CJ Milazzo and Oscar Whitely led the defensive effort. Milazzo recorded a game-high 16 tackles, while Whitely added 15. Ty Johnson recorded two tackles for loss, and Jones finished with an interception and three tackles.

As a team, Bridgewater totaled 273 yards of offense, a season high. The Eagles surrendered 344 rushing yards as Washington and Lee ran the ball 60 times, exceeding its season average. However, Bridgewater’s defense forced two turnovers inside its own 30-yard line, halting potential scoring opportunities on both occasions.

Bridgewater looks to carry the momentum into next week when Shenandoah visits for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
