A Hardy County, West Virginia man has broken his own record for hauling in the heaviest catfish ever caught in the Mountain State.

Earlier this month, Moorefield resident Allen Burkett set the hook on a massive channel cat while fishing at South Mill Creek. According to the Division of Natural Resources, at 37-and-a-half-pounds, it’s the largest catfish by weight to come out of West Virginia waterways.

The fish’s length was spectacular as well, coming in at 40-point-4 inches – or three-and-a-third feet long.

However, it wasn’t quite as long as last year’s record-setting fish of nearly 40-point-6 inches, also caught by Burkett.

He told MetroNews that his family plans to celebrate with a big fish fry.
