HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — If you see the flagpole removed at the Rockingham County Courthouse, don’t be alarmed.

The County is maintaining the lawn around the Courthouse, and in doing so, diseased trees and bushes will be removed, and the existing flagpole must be relocated.

Clerk of the Court Chaz Haywood, says after careful review, it was determined that the current flagpole’s location causes the flag to frequently become entangled in the adjacent Vietnam Veteran Memorial tree, a site of great significance. Haywood added, “We understand that this space holds great value to the community, especially in honoring our veterans. The flagpole will be moved to the southeastern corner of Court Square to allow clear, respectful display while protecting the memorial tree.”

All memorial markers and dedication plaques will be carefully relocated on the courthouse lawn to maintain their visibility.

Haywood says the change reflects the County’s commitment to preserving the historical and structural integrity of the Courthouse grounds and that their office remains committed to preserving the integrity, heritage, and enduring value of this public space.
