STRASBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — A man has been arrested following a high-speed chase on Interstate 81 through multiple counties Monday afternoon.
Bridgewater Police Chief said in a release that at approximately 3 p.m., officers with the Bridgewater Police Department were alerted by a license plate reader to a wanted suspect out of New York, who had recently committed a home invasion and stole a truck in Maryland.
The suspect was located in the area of Dinkel Avenue and Hickory Lane in Bridgewater, with his 4-year-old daughter in the truck.
A traffic stop was attempted and the suspect fled in the stolen vehicle at a high rate of speed. He continued on Interstate 81 in excess of speeds of 110 miles per hour.
The suspect, Esmeraldo Martinez De La Cruz, began shooting at officers with his daughter in the vehicle, as the pursuit continued northbound on I-81.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody on I-81, near mile marker 300. There were no reported injuries, the 4-year-old child was found unharmed in the vehicle, and she was later reunited with family.
Esmaraldo Martinez De La Cruz, 34 of Bronx, NY, was charged with felony eluding, reckless disregard of life of a child, 3 counts of attempted aggravated murder of law enforcement, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and taken to the Rockingham County Jail.
Multiple agencies were involved in the successful apprehension of this suspect. Bridgewater Police Department wants to thank all the law enforcement agencies that helped with the apprehension of the suspect and safe recovery of the child.
