HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — As families prepare for holiday festivities, the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA is reminding pet owners to prioritize the safety and well-being of their furry friends.
Director of Engagement, Aaron Cleveland, reminds us, “the holiday season presents unique hazards for pets, and by taking proactive measures, pet owners can ensure a joyful celebration for every family member—human and animal alike.”
Tips for a Pet-Safe Thanksgiving:
1. Mindful Feasting: Avoid sharing holiday meals with pets. Foods such as onions, garlic, chocolate, and artificial sweeteners can be toxic. Steer clear of giving pets bones, as they can splinter and cause digestive harm.
2. Secure Trash Cans: Dispose of leftovers and trash securely. Items like turkey bones, string, and food packaging can pose serious risks if ingested.
3. Quiet Retreat: Thanksgiving gatherings can be overwhelming. Provide pets with a quiet, comfortable space where they can retreat if they need a break from the festivities.
4. No Table Scraps: Ask guests not to feed pets from the table. Certain foods may be dangerous, and dietary changes can upset pets’ digestion.
5. Identification and Microchipping: With frequent opening and closing of doors during gatherings, pets may escape. Ensure they have proper identification and consider microchipping for added security.
6. Emergency Preparedness: Locate the nearest emergency veterinary clinic. Quick action is vital in case of accidental ingestion or other emergencies.
“Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude and celebration, but it’s important to stay mindful of potential hazards to our pets,” says Huck Nawaz, Executive Director at the RHSPCA. “By taking simple precautions, we can ensure that our pets remain safe and happy throughout the festivities.”
