HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC) will recognize three recipients of the 2026 Mary Reitz Nursing Scholarship marking the second year of a program established to support individuals pursuing careers in nursing.
The scholarship reception will be held today, June 17, at 6:00 pm in the VMRC campus’s Strite Auditorium, 1401 Virginia Avenue.
According to VMRC officials, established in 2025, the scholarship honors longtime VMRC resident Mary Reitz, whose career in nursing and nursing education spanned more than three decades. The scholarship provides financial support to individuals pursuing nursing education and is open to both VMRC employees and members of the local community.
The 2026 scholarship recipients are:
- Macie Sprouse, a graduate of Waynesboro High School who plans to attend James Madison University and pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Amy Matamoros, a graduate of Harrisonburg High School who plans to attend Eastern Mennonite University and pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Leticia Vega, a graduate of Rocktown High School who plans to attend James Madison University and pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with a minor in Medical Spanish.
This year’s recipients include two VMRC employees and one community member.
Through donor support, the scholarship program is reportedly expected to provide more than 20 full-tuition scholarships between 2025 and 2030.
