HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — A section of University Boulevard in Harrisonburg will be closed around the clock from July 13 through July 24 as construction continues on the University Boulevard Realignment Project.

The closure will affect University Boulevard between Driver Drive and the entrance to the James Madison University Convocation Center. Detours will direct motorists around the work zone.

Access to Driver Drive and nearby neighborhoods will remain available via Port Republic Road, while the Convocation Center parking lot can still be reached from Reservoir Street.

City officials urge drivers to plan ahead, follow posted detour signs and use caution when traveling near the construction area.

The realignment project includes a new two-lane roadway, shared-use path and sidewalk designed to improve safety and mobility for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists traveling to and from James Madison University and destinations in southeast Harrisonburg. The project also will make University Boulevard the primary through route at Oak Hill Drive, a change intended to improve traffic flow and safety along University Boulevard and Port Republic Road.

The work is being funded through the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Revenue Sharing Program. Residents with questions may contact the City of Harrisonburg Public Works Department for additional information.
