ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — When 80 Acres Farms announced plans to close its Route 11 packhouse facility in Harrisonburg in late July, it raised new questions in the community — especially about the future of the company’s greenhouse complex on Koehn Drive in northern Rockingham County. Residents also wondered about reported storm damage to the greenhouses during last winter’s snow and ice event.

Rocktown Now has confirmed that the nearly 10‑acre greenhouse operation has been sold to Ecopromt USA, which maintains an office in Broadway. The Route 11 packhouse was not included in the sale and is still scheduled to close on July 21. Multiple requests for comment from 80 Acres Farms’ corporate headquarters have gone unanswered.

The greenhouse complex, which shut down last fall, will gradually reopen under its new ownership later this summer, according to John Jonsson, CEO of Ecopromt USA. Jonsson emphasized that the packhouse and greenhouse properties are now completely separate entities.

“We hope to start seeding new plants by mid‑July or mid‑August,” Jonsson said. Hiring is expected to begin in mid‑summer as infrastructure work continues. That work includes repairing storm damage from last winter. “We lost one greenhouse of about 50,000 square feet — nearly 20 percent of our production capacity,” Jonsson said. “That will need to be repaired.”

Jonsson confirmed the purchase closed on Friday, May 29. He also noted that his family has deep ties to the site. His father, Ulf Jonsson, was part of the original Shenandoah Growers and has been involved with the facilities for more than two decades. Ulf Jonsson is the founder of Ecopromt AB, a Swedish firm specializing in controlled‑environment agriculture, climate‑control systems, and large‑scale greenhouse technologies. Ecopromt USA serves as the company’s North American branch.

As operations ramp up, the company expects to hire about 45 employees. Planned products include organic produce, potted herbs, and other plants — all grown at the Koehn Drive location.
