STAUNTON, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Frontier Culture Museum is celebrating the holiday season with two special offerings that bring historic holiday traditions to life. Visitors can explore the sights, sounds, and customs of Christmases past while discovering how families across different cultures and time periods celebrated the season.

Holidays by Lantern Light

The museum’s popular Holidays by Lantern Light tours are returning with a new format designed to immerse visitors in the holiday traditions of centuries past. Guests will walk by lantern light to historic farmhouses representing 17th-century England, 18thcentury Ireland and Germany, and 19th-century
Virginia.

Inside each farmhouse, costumed interpreters will welcome visitors by firelight and share the holiday customs and traditions of their respective cultures and time periods. Rather than traditional skits, this year’s program invites guests to experience history through immersive interpretation with audience participation possibly required.

Tours will depart from the Visitor Center every half hour, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and continuing through 8 p.m. on Thursdays through Sundays in December, with the final tour date on December 20.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors, and $10 for children. Tickets are on sale and must be purchased in advance.

Holiday Workshop Series

The Frontier Culture Museum’s popular adult holiday workshop series is also returning this year, offering participants the chance to explore seasonal traditions through hands-on activities inspired by different cultures and historical periods.

Each workshop combines historical interpretation with a festive project that participants can take home.

The 2026 workshop schedule includes:

Workshop tickets are $25 per person, and spaces are limited. Tickets are available now through the individual links listed above.
