AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — UPDATE (4/9/26 1:17 PM): Harrisonburg Police Department (HPD) has reported that multiple community members have reported receiving the Fairfax General District Court scam text, as well as numerous HPD employees.

If you received this message, do not scan the QR code, delete the thread, and report it as junk.

ORIGINAL STORY (4/8/26 5:49 PM): The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) reports that two different notices are being sent via text message. One is from the Department of Motor Vehicles and the other is from Fairfax General District Court.

The notices are being sent to citizens as a scare tactic thinking that you owe a fine. They want you scan the QR code at the bottom of the notice to settle your unpaid balance.

The ACSO encourages people to not scan the QR code.

If you receive one of these types of scams delete the text message and block it.
