TOMS BROOK, Va (WSVA) – Virginia State Police is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash in Shenandoah County. The crash occurred Monday at 6 pm on Interstate 81 at the 289-mile-marker just south of the Toms Brook exit.    

Sergeant Brent Coffey reported a 2015 Ford F350 was traveling north on Interstate 81 when its driver’s side tire blew out, causing it to run off the right side of the roadway, overturn, and collide with a guardrail. A backseat passenger was ejected into the roadway during the crash and struck by a northbound 2017 Kenworth tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer immediately stopped and remained on the scene.  

The backseat passenger in the Ford, Wilson R. Acosta Zelaya, 21, of Springfield, Va., died at the scene of the crash. He was not wearing a seatbelt.  

The driver of the Ford, Pedro Lemus Mendoza, 49, of Manassas, Va., was transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.   

Two additional adult passengers in the Ford were transported to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. Both were wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Kenworth, Fernando Sanchez Marin, 46, of San Joaquin, Mex., was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt.
