RICHMOND VA: (WSVA) – The Virginia General Assembly will look strikingly different than in years past when the 2024 legislative session gavels in today.
For the first time in history, a black person will preside over the House of Delegates. Following the November elections, Don Scott was elevated to the House speakership by fellow Democrats. Scott replaces Woodstock Delegate Todd Gilbert, who remains a leader among Republicans.
Also, the General Assembly will convene today with more female members than ever.
49 of the statehouse’s 140 seats are occupied by women this year – the most in Virginia history.
Both the Senate and the House of Delegates will come to order at high noon in Richmond.
