WAYNESBORO, VA (Rocktown Now) — A student report led to quick action earlier today in response to a BB gun incident at William Perry Elementary School.

Ryan Barber, Assistant Superintendent Waynesboro Public Schools, reported that a student told a teacher that another student, who was 9 years old, may have had a weapon in a bookbag.

Barber stated that the teacher immediately secured the bookbag, removed the student in question from the classroom, and escorted the student and bookbag to the school office.

A Waynesboro Police Department School Resource Officer was in the office and immediately searched the bookbag.

A BB gun was found, and a follow-up criminal investigation is underway to assess potential criminal charges.

Barber commended the student who reported the concern and the staff members who responded promptly and appropriately.
