WASHINGTON, D.C. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College field hockey team survived a thriller on Wednesday night as they took down Catholic 1-0.

How It Happened
• Catholic had the game’s first scoring opportunity, but it did not come until late in the opening quarter. Both teams jockeyed for possession, and the Cardinals earned the game’s first penalty corner in under five minutes to go in the quarter. Catholic rifled a shot off the chance, but Rachel Adel turned it away to keep the game scoreless. Catholic had an opportunity on the rebound, but the BC defense spoiled it with a block. CUA had one more push on the opportunity as the Cardinals fired another shot off the ensuing rebound, but it went wide, keeping the game scoreless after one.
• The home team fired a shot just after the quarter started, and Adel made the save again. BC earned its first scoring opportunity 90 seconds later as Lexi Francis ripped a shot on frame that was knocked away. BC earned a penalty corner in the seconds that followed, and Mollie Best mustered a shot that went wide of the cage. Adel was tested again halfway through the period, and she made the save on a Cardinal shot on target. BC earned a penalty corner in the final minute of the half and fired a pair of shots, including one by Fallon Dismukes that was saved just before the buzzer.
• BC opened the second half on the offensive. Francis fired a shot wide, and Reese Davis followed with a blast on target that was saved. The Eagles earned a penalty stroke on the ensuing rebound and looked to pounce. Olivia Ohleger took the opportunity for BC and cashed it as her shot found the back of the net, giving Bridgewater a 1-0 lead. BC kept pushing as Davis had another shot blocked, and Maylynn Watson ripped a shot in the final 90 seconds that was turned aside to keep it a 1-0 Bridgewater lead heading into the fourth.
• The Cardinals looked to strike back and blasted a trio of shots on frame in the opening minute of the quarter. Thaleia Khader stood tall as she turned away all three shots and maintained the lead. Catholic kept pushing, earning three penalty corners in succession, but none resulted in a shot. BC flipped the field and looked to add insurance in the final seven minutes. Best, Davis and Emi Craddock all rifled shots on target, but all three were saved. CUA flipped the field in the final two minutes and had chances to strike. The Cardinals blasted a shot that was turned away by Khader, but a BC foul gave Catholic a penalty corner with under two minutes to play. The Cardinals looked to strike, but again the BC defense fouled the chance to hang on for the thrilling victory in the Nation’s Capital.

Game Notes
• Ohleger tallied the difference-maker for her first goal of the year. Adel made three stops, and Khader added five for BC on the way to the shutout.
• Roman and Cristella both put a pair of shots on goal for Catholic. Lowman made seven saves for the Cardinals.
• Both teams put eight shots on goal in the contest, but Catholic had an edge in penalty corners at 6-4.
