VERONA, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office has taken several reports from family members over the past several weeks who have fallen victim to a scam whose family member is incarcerated at Middle River Regional Jail (MRRJ) in Verona, VA.
According to Sheriff Donald Smith, this scam consists of the family member being arrested then placed in MRRJ, and within a couple of hours, their family members are getting a call from an alleged Deputy with Augusta County Sheriff’s Office seeking bond money for their loved one to bail them out.
There has also been a scam similar, however the alleged Deputy states that they need money to place their loved one on a Home Electronic Monitoring Device.
The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office does not bond individuals out of jail.
If your family member happens to get incarcerated, call Middle River Regional Jail at 540-245-5420 and ask them about your loved one’s bond status.
As always, if you ever have a question about whether something is a scam, call the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office at 540-245-5333 before you send any money to someone.
