ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Route 704 (Cecil Wampler Road) bridge over Interstate 81 in Rockingham County is scheduled to be closed for up to a week beginning Thursday night, August 20.

Crews will be making repairs related to a vehicle strike that occurred last fall.

During the closure, drivers will detour as follows:

  • Eastbound traffic will go north on Route 11 (Valley Pike/Main Street), east on Route 679 (Pleasant Valley Road) and then south on Early Road.
  • Westbound traffic will go north on Route 988 (Early Road), west on Route 679 (Pleasant Valley Road) and then south on Route 11 (Main Street/Valley Pike).

Drivers should also expect overnight single-lane closures on I-81 near mile marker 241.5 during the same time period.

All work is weather permitting, and schedules are subject to change.
