RICHMOND, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Virginia Department of Transportation is asking residents to help shape the future of roadway safety by sharing their experiences and concerns through a statewide survey as officials update Virginia’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan.

The Strategic Highway Safety Plan is a five-year blueprint that guides efforts to reduce traffic crashes, fatalities and serious injuries across the Commonwealth. The plan is overseen by a steering committee that includes VDOT, the Virginia State Police, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, the Virginia Department of Health and other state and local transportation and safety partners.

The online survey is now open and will accept responses through Aug. 23. Participants are asked to identify the traffic safety issues they believe are most important, including concerns related to speeding, impaired driving, seat belt use and other roadway safety topics. The survey also seeks public feedback on strategies and actions that could help reduce crashes and improve safety for all road users.

According to VDOT, traffic-related deaths and serious injuries declined in Virginia during 2025 but remain at levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. Transportation officials say public feedback will play a key role in determining priorities for the next Strategic Highway Safety Plan and in guiding future investments and safety initiatives.

The updated Strategic Highway Safety Plan is expected to be released in early 2027.
