ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Rockingham County Circuit Court Clerk Chaz W. Haywood announced the installation of a new mixed-media artwork by 13-year-old local artist Marquel Ocheltree. Created through the Explore More Discovery Museum’s Artist Apprenticeship Program, the engraved metal piece is now on permanent display in the historic Rockingham County Courthouse.

The installation reportedly reflects Clerk Haywood’s commitment to supporting local and regional artists while expanding the courthouse’s collection of locally created artwork. The growing collection includes 207 pieces by local artists. Marquel said he drew inspiration from the building, noting, “I included the sun, the patterns, and the clock, and all the colors.” He added, “I am honored to have my art on display in the courthouse.”

“Launched in 2022, the Artist Apprenticeship Program has become a signature arts initiative at Explore More Discovery Museum, fostering creativity, confidence, and meaningful connections between young artists and professional mentors,” said Lisa Shull, executive director of the Explore More Discovery Museum. “The program is made possible through the support of generous community sponsors.”

Clerk Haywood, who serves on the Explore More Discovery Museum Board of Directors, praised the program and Marquel’s achievement. “We are proud to provide a place where artists like Marquel can share their work with the community. His artwork is a meaningful addition to our courthouse’s collection, and we are honored to support a program that encourages creativity and invests the next generation,” Haywood said.
