VERONA, Va – An Augusta County sheriff’s deputy is on administrative leave after he was seen on video tackling a supposedly intoxicated man over the weekend.

In a release, Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith said that fire and rescue personnel responded to a medical call at a storage facility on Lodge Lane in Verona just after noon on Saturday . The subject, 58-year-old Frank Alan Schulpman, reportedly became disorderly and a deputy was called in.

Upon arriving, Smith said the man, who appeared to be drunk, became belligerent and threatened the deputy, prompting a call for backup.

Bystander video shows the second deputy, Andrew Simonetti, arriving on scene and tackling Schulpman, who was arrested and charged with public intoxication.

After seeing the video, the sheriff said he placed Simonetti on administrative leave. He has also requested a criminal investigation by Virginia State Police.
