AFTON, Va – (WSVA) Drivers who were trying to get from the Charlottesville area over the mountain and into the Valley are having a tough time because of a wildfire.
It started as a tractor-trailer fire shortly before 1 pm Wednesday on Interstate 64 westbound at the top of Afton mountain.
Crews were able to extinguish the vehicle fire but not before a portion of the mountain caught on fire.
Fire crews continue to work to contain that fire, but major delays continue and there are also major delays leading up to the Crozet exit as drivers get off there and onto U-S Route 250.
Also, Augusta County Residents who travel this evening, please avoid U.S Route 250 crossing Afton Mountain because the road is closed from the Waynesboro City limits through Augusta County to Route 151 in Nelson County as a result of this fire.
Drivers need to use Interstate 64. The Fire Department’s and helicopters are working to extinguish this fire.
