AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — UPDATE (5/12/26 5:22 PM): The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office has completed the initial investigation into the deaths that occurred in the 700 block of Indian Mound Road in the Verona area of Augusta County.

According to a release, the deceased have been identified as 70-year-old Sharon Clark Armentrout, and her husband, 71-year-old Alan Wayne Armentrout, both of Verona.

At this time, the case appears to be a murder-suicide. The existing evidence indicates that Alan Armentrout shot his wife before taking his own life.

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division processed the scene with assistance from investigators with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Both bodies were transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke on the evening of May 11, 2026, where examinations were conducted today, May 12, 2026.

“This was an isolated domestic-related incident,” said Sheriff Donald L. Smith.

The investigation remains ongoing pending final reports from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

ORIGINAL STORY (5/11/26 3:54 PM): The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a double homicide in the 700 block of Indian Mound Road in the Verona area of Augusta County.

According to a release, at approximately 1:12 p.m., the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office received a request from family members to conduct a welfare check at the residence.

Once inside the home, deputies reportedly located an elderly male and female deceased.

The Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad, Verona Fire Department, and Staunton Fire Department responded to the scene to assist.

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division remains on scene and is actively investigating this incident.
