HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Harrisonburg Police Chief Joe Tucker presented an overview of Automated License Plate Readers in the city to the City Council last night.
According to the presentation, there are 30 total ALPR Cameras in the City of Harrisonburg. 28 stationary ALPRs, 2 mobile Falcon Flex cameras.
When asked about the possibility of increasing the number of cameras or an upgrade, Chief Tucker said the cameras that are up now are perfectly fine.
“These are the ones we have; these are the ones we need,” said Chief Tucker. “I’m a proponent of the cameras. There have been people who have been in the profession over 30 years who have told me repeatedly, ‘these are the best
Chief Tucker continued by saying it’s a powerful technology, so they have to regulate it.
The cameras capture still photos of passing vehicles with the only information being recorded are the license plate, location, type of vehicle, and unique identifiers.
