Bow hunting season opened for deer and bear this weekend, and the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office is sharing basic tips for staying safe in the woods.
In a notice on social media, Sheriff Tim Carter recommends that if you are out hunting, wear blaze orange so others can see you. He also says to let someone know when and where your hunt takes you, and to be sure to bring a phone in case of emergency.
Since tree stands are commonly used during archery season, Jeff Pease with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources has some safety tips for anyone scaling trunks this fall.

Muzzleloader season for both deer and bear starts in November.
