AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — A Stuarts Draft man was arrested after a standoff on Tuesday evening.
Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith says on March 24, 2026, at approximately 5:36 p.m., ACSO received a call regarding a male subject in the 1400 block of Cold Springs Road who was reportedly yelling and cursing at passing vehicles.
Sheriff Smith says while deputies were enroute, additional 911 calls were received advising that the male was armed with a firearm and threatening to shoot anyone who came onto his property.
Deputies arrived on scene and made contact with the individual, who Sheriff Smith says continued to behave in a disorderly manner, before retreating into his residence and barricading himself inside. Deputies conducted interviews with multiple community members and subsequently obtained arrest warrants for the suspect, identified as Evan Smyres, 41, of Stuarts Draft, Virginia.
Smyres has been charged with the following offenses:
· Two counts of §18.2-282 – Brandishing a Firearm
· One count of §18.2-119 – Trespassing on Private Property Without Authority
Smith says the Sheriff’s Office activated its Crisis Negotiations Team, SWAT Team, and K9 Division to safely resolve the situation. After a coordinated response, Smyres was taken into custody without further incident.
Evan Smyres is currently being held without bond at the Middle River Regional Jail.
Anyone who encountered or had any interaction with Mr. Smyres in the Cold Springs Road area or in the roadway is asked to contact the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office at 540-245-5333.
