HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – Radford scored eight runs over the final five innings to come away with a 10-6 victory over James Madison in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Park.
JMU (11-12) finished with six runs on 10 hits, while Radford (10-11) recorded 10 runs on 12 hits with three errors.
Ryan Gocio and Wyatt Campbell each recorded a pair of hits to lead JMU at the plate. Jack Guerrero recorded a double and an RBI, while Ike Schmidly also drove in a run.
Eli Hudgins of Radford went 4-for-4 to pace the Highlanders at the plate, while Brady Powell drove in a team-high four runs. Parker Noonan got the win on the mound for RU, striking out two.
How It Happened
First Inning
The Dukes capitalized on two straight throwing errors with savvy baserunning to bring Ike Schmidly and Reece Moody home, putting JMU up 2-0 early.
Third Inning
With four walks and a hit, Radford was able to plate two runs to even the score at two.
Kyle Langley was able to reach third on a fielding error deep in left field, then Ike Schmidly hit a deep sacrifice fly to bring Langley home, putting the Dukes back on top 3-2.
Fifth Inning
After a pair of singles, now with runners in both corners, Radford utilized a sacrifice bunt to bring one run in, and a double deep down the right field line to plate another, putting the Highlanders in front 4-3.
Sixth Inning
A RBI double to left field and a trio of walks brought in two runs, stretching Radford’s lead to 6-3.
With Reece Moody on second, Jack Guerrero fired a RBI double into left. Wyatt Campbell kept the hitting going, launching a RBI triple of his own to the right field wall to cut JMU’s deficit to 6-5.
Seventh Inning
Radford was able to plate two runs, with the first coming from a groundout RBI and the second from a wild pitch, bringing the Highlanders’ lead to 8-5.
Eighth Inning
Four walks brought in another run for Radford, making it 9-5 in favor of the Highlanders. JMU struck back with a double by Gocio to bring home Thompson to cut the deficit to three (9-6).
Ninth Inning
For the Highlanders, Powell singled down the left field line to score Parks for a 10-6 RU advantage.
Game Notes
• Jack Guerrero and Ike Schmidly extended their on-base streaks to nine straight games.
• Gocio recorded the third multi-hit game of his freshman season.
