WINCHESTER, Va. – The 13th-ranked Bridgewater College baseball team took down No. 6 Shenandoah on the road by a final score of 11-5 Tuesday.
Score: No. 13 Bridgewater (BC) 11, No. 6 Shenandoah (SU) 5
Records: BC (18-3, 3-3), SU (19-4, 5-4)
How It Happened
• As soon as the Eagles broke open the score in the first frame, the Hornets faced a deficit difficult to climb back from. BC jumped out to seven-straight runs through the first three innings and applied immediate pressure. Jakson Walter kicked off the scoring with an RBI single sending home Nick Stavros. Then, with bases loaded and a keen sense of plate discipline, the Eagles rang up back-to-back walks to bring in two more runs to start the game.
• BC pressed the gas in the second inning to tack on an additional two runs. Zack Chadwell laced a single down the right field line to knock in Stavros. Quickly to follow, Trent Holland served a shot into the infield to get Bransen Hensley to come around to score.
• In the third inning, BC held firm control while putting together two more runs as Stavros earned an RBI off a ground out, and Chadwell took his base with a walk to get Jake Harris to score for a 7-0 lead. SU managed to work in some offense with three runs in the bottom of the frame, but BC stayed well in control with strong bullpen arms and active at-bats.
• The Eagles loaded the bases for the third time in the game in the fourth inning and converted the eighth run of the day from a hit by pitch to Stavros. Walter came around to score. The Hornets did not score again until the sixth inning as a run was scored from a ground out.
• Chandler Valbak added more offensive pressure in the later innings with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Although the Hornets rang up a run to turn the score to 9-5, the Eagles shut down all opposing threats as Zack Chadwell sent out a no-doubter over the center field wall. Bryce Suters then capped the scoring off with an RBI single, making the score stand at a comfortable 11-5 advantage. Tanner Evans entered the eighth with two outs and closed the game successfully retiring the next four batters for the 11-5 victory.
