HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Harrisonburg School Superintendent Dr. Michael Richards presented a State of the Schools report during last night’s City Council meeting.

Dr. Richards said while they remain a growing division, enrollment has plateaued recently, especially in elementary schools.

He added that the philosophy on managing growth is three parts, including balancing schools with rezoning.

“This is to protect the taxpayer, right? We rezone. So, we move students. We say, this school has capacity, this one’s getting overcrowded, so we move students,’ said Dr. Richards.

The other two ways to manage growth is potential additions to current schools as well as building new schools and Richards added that the division has land for an elementary school in the capital improvement plan.
