WINTERGREEN, Va. — Law enforcement across the commonwealth are mourning the death of a “dedicated” Wintergreen police officer and Spotswood High School graduate who was shot and killed on Friday night.
That’s how the Wintergreen Police Department described 31-year-old Officer Mark Christopher Wagner the Second who, according to Virginia State Police, responded to an assault in progress on Arrowood Lane just after 10 o’clock Friday.
Wagner encountered 23-year-old Daniel M. Barmak, who struggled with the officer over his service weapon. During the struggle, state police say Barmak fatally shot Wagner.
Wintergreen Police and Nelson County deputies arrested the shooter, who is charged with capital murder, use of a firearm while committing a felony, and two felony counts of malicious wounding.
Barmak is currently held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
