Harrisonburg residents will soon notice a small increase in their water and sewage bills.

City Council unanimously voted last night to raise water rates by 20 cents per 1-thousand gallons used, and 26 cents for consumers outside city limits. Sewage rates will increase 30 cents. The increase passed 4-0 in the absence of councilman Chris Jones. Councilmember. Dany Fleming justified the price hike as a quality-of-life investment.

The money generated by the increase will fund pipe replacement projects across the city. The average water and sewer bill is expected to rise less than three dollars per month.
