Harrisonburg City Public Schools are putting a plan into motion to keep schools safer.

During a school board work session last night, Superintendent Dr. Michael Richards, Chief Operating Officer Shawn Printz and Harrisonburg Police Chief Kelley Warner unveiled a plan to bring a new key card access system to city schools.

Harrisonburg High School will be the first in the city to install unbreakable windows known as Safety Shields, as well as new camera systems with technology that can detect weapons.

Richards said these upgrades are justified because, unfortunately, times have changed.

The Superintendent said he hopes to have the new safeguards in place by this fall.
