SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Shenandoah County authorities are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that happened over the weekend in the Bayse area.

Sheriff Tim Carter reported that the incident happened shortly after 6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 17, 2025, in 1722 Alum Springs Road, when a deputy responded to an attempted sexual assault of a child by a 28-year-old man.

When the deputy arrived, Carter said the man began to get physical with the deputy.

“The male assaulted the deputy by striking the deputy several times in the head with the deputy’s handcuffs,” said Carter. “The deputy discharged his agency issued firearm. The male was struck and initially continued to fight the deputy and tried to disarm the deputy. The man was taken into custody by other arriving deputies.”

Carter said the suspect, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer was taken to Sentara RMH where he was treated then released and placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
