HARRISONBURG VA: (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Rockingham County has announced regulations for open burning, aimed at ensuring public safety and environmental protection. The new guidelines specify that open burning permits will only be issued for the disposal of brush and landscape waste. The burning of household trash, construction debris, tires, asphalt shingles, plastics, rubber, and similar materials is strictly prohibited under the county’s Fire Prevention Code.
Key conditions for open burning include:
Location: Burning must occur on private property with the owner’s permission and at least 50 feet away from any structure.
Timing: No additional material can be added to the fire after midnight. From February 15 to April 30, burning is only permitted after 4:00 pm if within 300 feet of flammable materials.
Supervision: A responsible party must remain with the fire until it is fully extinguished. Leaving the fire unattended or smoldering is not allowed.
Safety Measures: Adequate means to extinguish the fire, such as a water hose, heavy equipment, shovel, or rake, must be available on-site.
Manageable Size: Large brush piles should be broken down to ensure only a manageable amount is burned at one time.
Smoke and Odor Control: Fires producing offensive smoke, odors, or ash affecting neighboring properties may result in permit revocation and mandatory extinguishment.
Violations of these conditions can lead to permit revocation and classification as a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Additionally, individuals may be held liable for the costs associated with extinguishing out-of-control fires.
Residents are urged to adhere to these regulations to prevent accidents and ensure community safety.
