HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – The Harrisonburg Police Department has arrested a suspect wanted on multiple charges, including attempted murder, following a coordinated law enforcement operation.

On March 8, 2025, HPD received information that 22-year-old Kayshan Smith of Goochland, Virginia, was in the Harrisonburg community. Smith was wanted on several warrants stemming from an investigation by the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

HPD Patrol Officers quickly located a vehicle associated with Smith in a housing complex parking lot and secured a perimeter around the area. The HPD SWAT team was then deployed and a short time later they observed Smith attempting to leave the area by vehicle. The SWAT team then moved in and safely took him into custody without incident.

“This arrest demonstrates the dedication and professionalism of our officers, who worked swiftly to ensure the safety of our community while removing a dangerous individual from our city,” said Deputy Chief Todd Miller of the Harrisonburg Police Department. “We are proud of the teamwork and coordination displayed by our patrol officers, SWAT team and our partner agencies in executing this operation successfully.” HPD received assistance from the James Madison University Police Department as well as the Harrisonburg Fire Department. Smith was transported to the Rockingham Regional Jail and being held without bond on the following charges.
Felonies:
• Attempt to willfully, deliberately, and with premeditation kill and murder in the first degree.
• While armed with a deadly weapon, break and enter into a dwelling at nighttime with intent to commit larceny or felony.
• Recklessly handle a firearm.
• Maliciously discharge a firearm into an occupied building or dwelling.
• Use, attempt to use, or display in a threatening manner a firearm while committing or attempting to commit murder, and burglary.
Misdemeanors:
• (2 counts) – Assault and battery of a family or household member.
• Intentionally destroy or damage property valued under $1,000.
