BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) – Bridgewater baseball fell short to No. 11 nationally ranked Christopher Newport, 12-10, at Bridgewater Baseball Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles fell 12-10 against Christopher Newport at home Wednesday.

Records; BCE (4-2), CNU (5-3)

How It Happened
• Despite the early offensive surge by the Eagles, the Captains came storming back becoming too much to handle late in the ninth when it came down to the final outs.
• BCE knocked in four runs to start the game in the bottom of the first. Trent Holland lined a single to the right side to bring home Lucas Bauer. Zack Chadwell followed that up with a single of his own with Chandler Valbak scoring. Holland turned to home on a wild pitch crossing the plate in time while Spencer Sigmon reached on an infield single which brought home Ashton Smith.
• CNU knotted it up at four with a two RBI double and an RBI single. The Captains continued the scoring in the next three innings going up by four after the top of the fourth. Smith responded with a ripped double down the left-field line knocking in Holland.
• The Captains added another run in the fifth off a fielder’s choice, but the Eagles worked to slowly cut the deficit. In the next two innings, BCE tacked on three runs with RBIs from Valbak, Sigmon, and Nick Stavros.
• At 9-8 CNU, more runs came from the Captains with an RBI in the seventh and two RBIs in the eighth.
• It came down to the final inning for the Eagles. Valbak worked a single to left field scoring in Stavros, then Smith cracked a single down the left side for the scored run by Bauer. With bases loaded, the Eagles were situated to do more damage; however, on the one out CNU’s D’Arcy retired the next two batters to get out of trouble and avoid the walk-off for the 12-10 final.
