HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — As temperatures rise over the next few days, the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA is reminding pet owners to take proactive steps to keep pets safe from the dangers of extreme heat.
“Hot weather can quickly become life-threatening for pets,” said Huck Nawaz, Executive Director of the RHSPCA. “Simple precautions can prevent tragedy and ensure pets stay safe, healthy, and comfortable.”
Never Leave Pets in Hot Cars
Even on a mild day, temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise to deadly levels within minutes. Leaving windows cracked does little to slow the heat buildup. The RHSPCA urges pet owners to never leave animals unattended in a vehicle under any circumstances.
Protect Pets During Walks
Asphalt and pavement can become dangerously hot and burn paw pads. Walk dogs during early morning or evening hours and test surfaces with your hand to check if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. Always bring water and take frequent breaks.
Watch for Ticks and Parasites
Warm weather also increases the presence of ticks and other parasites. Pet owners should ensure their animals are on veterinarian-recommended preventatives and check pets regularly after spending time outdoors.
Special Considerations for Outdoor Pets
For pets that spend time outdoors, access to fresh water and adequate shade is critical. Dog houses alone are not sufficient in extreme heat as they can trap heat and worsen conditions. Outdoor cats should have access to cool, shaded areas and fresh water at all times. When possible, bringing pets indoors during peak heat is strongly encouraged.
