DAYTON, VA (Rocktown Now) — Fire and Rescue crews prevented an electrical short from causing costly damage to a business in Rockingham County Thursday afternoon.

Shortly after 12:30pm, Chief Jeremy Holloway says firefighters were dispatched from Emergency Response Station 14 for report of a fire at Heritage Real Estate Company on the 2-hundred block of South Main Street in Dayton.

 “With the engine there in Dayton, they were there in two minutes,” Holloway said. “As they were investigating, they found smoke in the basement. Crews went in and figured out there was a sump pump with a short in it burned up and smoked up the area.”

Holloway reports that crews quickly removed the faulty pump from the building’s basement and used fans to clear lingering smoke, allowing the occupants to return and resume business.

The structure suffered only minor damage, and no one was injured in the incident.
