ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Thursday, July 30, on Harpine Highway in Rockingham County.

Virginia State Police Public Relations Coordinator Matt Demlein says that at around noon, a 2025 Toyota 4Runner was heading southbound on Harpine Highway, near the intersection with Sharon Lane, when it was unable to avoid a 2009 Toyota Camry that had pulled out from a parking lot to go northbound.  The 4Runner did attempt to swerve to miss the Camry, but struck it at an angle, forcing the Camry off of the left side of Harpine Highway.

A passenger in the Camry, Wilma Ryman, 81, of Timberville, Va., suffered serious injuries.  Ryman succumbed to those injuries on July 31, 2026, at an area hospital.

The driver of the Camry, Cecil E. Ryman, 82, of Timberville, Va., suffered minor injuries.  Cecil Ryman was charged with failing to yield the right of way.

The driver of the 4Runner suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
